Just like salmon and tuna, the super-nutritious mackerel is another oily fish what your doctor will recommend for better cardiovascular health. Cardiologists say that at least two servings of fatty fish in your weekly diet can boost heart performance.

Mackerel is an economically important food fish that is consumed worldwide. It belongs to a family of saltwater fish composed of over 30 different species, found in deep temperate and tropical waters. It has many varieties; the most popular ones are the Atlantic mackerel, Pacific mackerel, Spanish mackerel and king mackerel fish. Being a tropical fish, it spoils easily and is susceptible to food poisoning. So it must be refrigerated or cured immediately on the day of its catch.

The mackerel is an oily fish, a rich storehouse of omega-3 fatty acids, protein and micronutrients. It’s a favorite among fish lovers due to its versatility, flavor and incredible nutrient profile. Studies have shown that regular consumption could help drop blood pressure and cholesterol, minimize the waistline, protect against depression, and keep bones healthy and strong. Low in calories, the fish is especially high in vitamins D and B12, selenium, niacin and phosphorus, some zinc, copper and vitamin A among a range of other essential vitamins and minerals.

The mackerel has anti-carcinogenic properties, able to reduce the risk of some cancers, like breast, prostate, renal and colon cancers. This is due to the presence of antioxidants in the fish, notably Coenzyme Q10. Mackerel also fortifies the immune system, again due to the Coenzyme Q10, which enhances the body’s capacity to fight infections.

One serving (200 gm) of Korean grilled mackerel has the following high count of micronutrients, thus: calories (379), fat (25 gm), potassium (693 mg), sodium (822 mg), and protein (35 gm). It is, though, low in carbohydrates (< 1mg). It is also recommended to watch that excess sodium in mackerel.
