Valentine’s Day and White Day

South Korea celebrates Valentine’s Day in much the same way that we do in the United States, except that it’s the women and girls who will often buy gifts of chocolate for the men that they are interested in. This may seem one-sided, but the women get their dues exactly one month later.

It is then that Koreans celebrate something called White Day. This is the counterpart to Valentine’s Day recognized in parts of Asia, imported to Korea from nearby Japan. Its name describes the white boxes of chocolate that the men will traditionally buy for the women who purchased chocolate for them on Valentine’s Day.
