What is Mak-Guhl-Li?

Our Bellevue Korean restaurant has a great selection of traditional Korean liquors, and mak-guhl-li is one of the lesser-known varieties. This is a Korean rice wine made from rice, wheat, and other grains, fermented until it produces a semi-transparent fluid and an opaque residue that gathers at the bottom. When this transparent fluid is drunk by itself, it is called dong-dong-ju. It is only mak-guhl-li when the fluid is properly mixed with the residue.

This drink has a very sweet taste to it, and is a popular compliment for pa-jeon. These “Korean pancakes” go well with the taste of the liquor, and many people like to pair them together during cold, rainy days. You can do the same at Seoul Hot Pot, so come visit us when the next big downpour hits and get yourself through the wet season in true, Korean style!
